Mon...

I finished one Monkey sock last night (hence the title of this post. I presume the ...KEY will come in a few days).

Pix:

It was fun! Really well written pattern and quite easy. Not sure what the fuss is about turning a heel and grafting the toe is all about. Then again this encompasses my basic style of knitting: FULL SPEED AHEAD. DAMN THE TECHNIQUE (or torpedoes, really). Plus I am very good at teaching myself stuff, be it from books, articles or videos.

I am a little dubious about knitting the second sock. Didn't I already do this once?

And honestly, the whole product vs process debate that "rages" on in the knitting world is moot. I am both a product and process knitter, depending on what the project is. And sometimes I'm both at the same time. For socks, it is definitely product. I am motivated to knit the second one because I want a damn pair of red monkey socks.

I am also both a process and product knitter - I love making and then wearing knitted items

  2. I'm definitely a product knitter myself. That's probably why I stick to small projects so I constantly have new things!

I like the color you chose for the Monkeys. Red socks are fun! Just wait until people start noticing and complimenting you on your socks. Then you'll need to knit more for them to compliment!

  4. Yeah, it sure depends!

I am always jazzing around with my basic sock pattern, so I knit both at once (each on its own set of needles), otherwise they'd be completely different. So I have product and process both.

And lace, well, that can be so interesting to knit, the end product takes me completely by surprise, in a "Wow, I MADE that?" way.

  5. I suspect most of us are some combination of product/process. Like you, I don't see what the big deal is about turning a heel, but grafting is another story. I had a really hard time figuring it out. I kept coming out with a purl row instead of a knit row!

  7. Congrats on your first sock! I've been trying to decide what to take with me to Portland to work on next week. Now, I'm thinking socks! Haven't made any in awhile. =) Off to pick a pattern and yarn...

Oh, and yeah, it's not that hard. I've taught myself most of what I know. I got a good start on knitting basics from a friend, but took it myself from there and also taught myself to crochet. There are so many great tutorials out there now making it so easy.
